Haze Starts To Affect Events In Langkawi

LANGKAWI (Kedah, Malaysia), Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The worsening haze situation in Langkawi since Monday has begun to affect events that have been planned in the island. This includes the Malaysian Port Auxiliary Police Head and Security Seminar Conference (MAPPAC) which is scheduled to be held Tuesday but was cancelled because participants from outside the island could not attend it as their flights from Kuala Lumpur Monday had been cancelled. Monday, two flights from Kuala Lumpur had to be cancelled after the Langkawi International Airport was closed for more than three hours for security reasons after the visibility was limited to 500 metres only due to the haze. A Bernama survey at several tourist attractions also found it appeared rather deserted compared to other days with some tourists being seen wearing face masks. According to the Department of Environment, as at 12pm Tuesday, Langkawi recorded unhealthy air pollutant index reading of 165. -- BERNAMA
