Malaysian Youth Named Commonwealth Youth Council Chairman

From Mohd Razman Abdullah VALLETTA (Malta), Nov 30 (Bernama) -- A Malaysian youth has been elected the new Chairman of the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC), for the 2015-2017 term. An engineer by profession, Kishva Ambigapathy, 25, was elected as the new team leader at the recent CYC's Youth Forum, here, making him the first youth from Asia to hold the post. Describing the appointment as "a proud moment" for Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was a global recognition to Malaysian youth leadership. "Kishva Ambigapathy is the present and the future leader, the country needs to produce more young leaders like him," he told reporters after the breakfast dialogue with state leaders on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), here Saturday. As CYC represents national youth bodies from 53 country members, the appointment will put him responsible to lead more than 1.2 billion Commonwealth youth, aged under 29. Ahmad Zahid was also optimistic Kishva would give positive contribution for the Commonwealth as well as enhance the country's image on the international stage. Kishva, who hails from northern Penang state, holds an electronic engineering degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2010 and is currently pursuing a masters degree in political global studies at Durham University in England. Commenting on his appointment, Kishva, among others, promised to look into how the CYC could play its role in various issues including climate change, youth entrepreneurship and youth participation in terrorism. "My manifesto is clear, whatever issues being discussed in the Commonwealth Youth Forum, we are going to do that," he said. Kishva said during a brief meeting with Ahmad Zahid, he had expressed his intention to relocate the CYC's secretariat from Sri Lanka to Kuala Lumpur. "Malaysia has several international youth organisations, including ASEAN Youth Council, so by relocating the office it will be a boon for the country as well to the CYC in realising its action plan," said the Tanjung Malim (a town in the state of Perak) MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress) Branch Youth leader. -- BERNAMA
