Police Officers Guard KPU Ahead Of Election Result Announcement

Jakarta, July 22 (Antara) - Some 3,165 police officers are guarding the General Elections Commission (KPU) building ahead of the announcement of the presidential election result here on Tuesday. All the personnel have been deployed to guard the area around the KPU building, Senior Commissioner of the Jakarta Police stated. The deployment of police officers is an anticipatory measure taken to handle a likely exodus of supporters of the presidential candidates during the announcement scheduled at 4 p.m. local time today. "Anyone can come, but we suggest that they do not come. They can follow the announcement on television," he remarked. Since Tuesday evening, the Imam Bonjol Street has been closed for the public as police officers are guarding the street. The police officers are equipped with water cannons, six barracudas, escape vehicles, and tear gas, among other things. "All personnel are ready, and they will take action against anyone who breaks the laws," he remarked. KPU Chairman Husni Kamil earlier reported that the presidential election result will be announced today at 4 p.m. In the morning, the KPU held a discussion on vote recapitulation of the five remaining provinces of North Sumatra, Papua, Jakarta, East Java, and North Maluku. Indonesia implemented the third direct and democratic presidential election on July 9, which was contested by two presidential and vice presidential candidates: Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa and Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla. There is stiff competition in the race for presidency and has polarized the public and the media.
