TASS news agency marking 111 years since foundation

MOSCOW, September 1. /TASS/. TASS is making 111 years since its foundation. The news agency was set up in 1904 by Czar Nicholas II’s decree and had the name of the St Petersburg Agency until 1914. It was then renamed into the Petrograd Agency in 1914, ROSTA in 1918, TASS in 1925, ITAR-TASS in 1992, and then again TASS in 2014. Since September 1, 1904, our news agency has not stopped work for a single hour. It has surveyed all the significant events in Russia and worldwide and has served as a reliable vehicle for official information. In addition to it, TASS has been creating and maintaining vital social and political projects. TASS remains a vibrant news organization after eleven decades of its history, says Director General Sergei Mikhailov. "We’re watching closely all the tendencies emerging in the global media and bringing to the market every year the highly demanded information products and services that meet the interests of our customers in Russia and abroad," he says. "Their list includes TASS Audio, Russia’s first and so far only service for providing sound elements to radio station, the popular science portal Cherdak, the TASS Transport Newswire, and others." "We’ll present a range of other interesting projects shortly," Sergei Mikhailov indicates. Throughout its history, TASS has collaborated with notable Russian writers, poets, artists, and public personalities, such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Konstantin Paustovsky, Valentin Katayev, Ilya Ehrenburg, Samuil Marshak, and many others. The agency issues today more than a hundred information products featuring political, economic, public, cultural and sports aspects of life in this country and elsewhere in Russian and English. The daily volume of the information it provides reaches 300 full-size newspaper pages. The scope of our subscribers embraces more than 5,000 corporations, including more than 1,000 media outlets, 200 diplomatic missions, 250 financial companies and banks, over 2,000 industrial facilities, research organizations, educational institutions, and libraries. TASS has a ramified network of bureaus and offices that does not have analogues among Russian media. We boast having 68 bureaus in 63 countries and 70 regional bureaus and offices in Russia. More than 1,500 staff members create a full-scale picture of life across the world. Read more
