Two UMS Scholars Receive JICA President's Commendation For 2014

KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia), Oct 30 (Bernama) -- Two of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)'s scholars were among 22 recipients of the 10th Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President's Commendation for this year. The recipients, both from the university's Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage are Prof Dr Kamarulzaman Askandar and Dr Zam and Dr Ayesah Abubakar. In a ceremony here Wednesday, they received the Certificate of Commendation and tribute from JICA headquarters as recognition for their cooperation and long-standing contribution to JICA's activities. UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohd Harun Abdullah said the partnership between JICA and UMS went a long way, since the year 2002, through the Bornean Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation (BBEC) Programme, a multi-agency collaboration between JICA, the Sabah state government and UMS. "We furthered our collaboration through the peace-building platform between the government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), now known as Consolidation for Peace (COP) programme with JICA through the leadership of both the recipients," he said in his welcoming speech. Dr Mohd Harun congratulated JICA and said he was proud with UMS's continuous efforts in strengthening the collaboration and hoped this smart partnership would encourage more initiatives and activities in the future. Meanwhile, Programme Manager of JICA-KL, Teoh Siaw Keng said the commendation was presented to individual, groups and project teams in recognition of their contribution to the development of human resources, society and the economy of developing countries. -- BERNAMA
