European Parliament President’s remarks on Azerbaijan are discouraging and outrageous

Baku, November 27, AzerTAc “European Parliament President Martin Schultz's remarks on Azerbaijan are discouraging and outrageous”, stated the acting spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Hikmet Hajiyev commenting on Schultz's remark at the plenary session of the European Parliament on 26 November. Leyla Yunus, of whom Schultz spoke, beside other crimes, faces charges of the gravest crime - high treason. “Investigation into Yunus's case in underway and interference with its process is a demonstration of disrespect to the supremacy of law”, Hajiyev said. As for Schultz's statement regarding the visit of the European Parliament delegation to Azerbaijan, the acting spokesman said that the official structures of Azerbaijan did not receive any official request regarding this issue. “By doing so, the European Parliament president attempted to distort this issue, which causes real regret”, he said. Hajiyev drew attention to a number of problems with human rights in the EU member-states. “Among such problems are Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, growing tendencies of discrimination, police violence, problems of job relations, violation of migrants' rights”, the diplomat said, recommending the European Parliament president to pay more attention to clashes in Fergusson, violence shown by the police, excess use of force in Brussels and other European cities.
