Malaysia Eyes Team Title At 2016 World University Squash Championship

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), May 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is eyeing the team event title at the 2016 World University Squash Championship (WUS) to be held in Kuala Lumpur from September 5-11. "I expect Egypt to give us a stiff challenge," said Malaysian Universities Sports Council (MASUM) chairman Prof Dr Abdullah Mohamad Said after the launch of 2016 WUS by Malaysian Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh, here Thursday. The 9th WUS to be played at Nicol David Arena in Bukit Jalil will feature three categories: the men's single, the women's single and the team event. Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) president Huang Ting How said they are eyeing the gold medal in all categories. "We will give full cooperation to the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and MASUM to ensure a successful tournament," he added. The deadline for entries is June 30. Meanwhile, MOHE Sports Division secretary Hazally Jali said 61 players from 17 countries have confirmed their participation in 2016 WUS. They include South Africa, United States, Finland, Japan, Canada, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland and Great Britain. In the 8th WUS in Chennai, India (2014), Malaysia won the bronze medal in the team event after beating South Africa 2-1. Egypt emerged champions after beating Great Britain 2-1 in the final. -- BERNAMA
