MALAYSIA MAY GET A400M AIRCRAFT ON TIME
From Umi Hani Sharani
SINGAPORE, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is expected to receive its four
Airbus military aircraft, -- A400M -- on time, according to Airbus Military vice
president of defence capabilities marketing, Peter Scoffham.
Scoffham said the success in building the A400M aircraft in the last
six-and-a-half-years was incredible and Malaysia's order may not be affected.
"It (delivery of A400M) may still be 2013," he told a media briefing at the
Singapore Air Show here Wednesday.
It was recently reported that Malaysia's order, signed in 2005, may be
delayed by up to three years until 2016
He said the firm was expected to talk with other regional governments to
take up its range of military aircraft.
"A lot of planes today were difficult to maintain and this makes them more
expensive. A lot of them needs to be replaced and specifically in this part
of the world, they will also need civic capabilities to support the ground
people besides the military," he said.
Citing a disaster relief, Scoffham said, the A400M, which has been designed
for operations in unprepared (jungle) airstrips, could combine both its logistic
and tactical capablities to carry payloads up to 30 tonnes for 2,400 nautical
miles.
"The aircraft can also maintain its flight at sea-level cabin pressure up
to 19,000 ft for casualty evacuation.
"The plane will take abour 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur to Padang, Indonesia
and at any stage can still have a minimum of 54 seats which can be used to hold
medicines as well," he said.
Scoffham said South-East Asia was becoming more important to the firm, and
many countries were interested in the multi-role aircraft.
"Of the 1,000 of its military aircraft flying globally now, 233 have
been sold in Asia," he said.
He said besides the A400M, the other aircraft included the CN-235/C-295
which complemented the heavy airlifters, as well as the A330 multi-role tanker
transport which would meet the demand of both tanker and freighter at the same
time besides being able to hold up 45 tonnes of cargo and 380 people on board.
