MALAYSIAN GOVT TO POSTPONE CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL WORKERS

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The government will postpone its crackdown on
illegal workers until after the Chinese New Year celebrations, said Home
Minister Hishamuddin Tun Hussein.

He said the decision was taken after receiving commitment from the
Association of Restaurant Owners which pledged to give its full cooperation when
the enforcement is carried out.

The Association had pleaded for the enforcement action to be taken
after the festivities as it would affect their businesses, he told a press
conference after a meeting with representatives of the Association at his
ministry here Friday.

Hishammuddin also stated that he wanted to see a high level of commitment
and cooperation from the association's members by supplying the government with
the numbers of workers that they had, including those whose permits had expired.

As to the Ministry's focus on decreasing the crime rate by employing more
police officers, Hishammuddin said he was happy that the crime index had shown a
decrease following closer cooperation amongst the relevant government agencies
and authorities.
