M'SIA KEEN TO COLLABORATE WITH NEIGHBOURS TO DEVELOP DEFENCE INDUSTRY

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is keen to collaborate with neighbouring countries Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore in developing its defence industry, Defence Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

To this end, he said, Malaysia would propose a framework for such
collaboration at the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam in May.

"For a start we are looking at forming a strategic collaboration with our three
neighbours and may expand it to cover collaboration with other countries in
Asia," he told reporters here Monday after the sponsorship signing ceremony for
the Defence Services Asia 2010 conference and exhibition.

He added that several representatives from companies in the United States and
Europe had also indicated their interests in making Malaysia a hub for their
operations.

Earlier Zahid witnessed the signing of a sponsorship agreement between DRB Hicom
Defence Technologies (Deftech) and DSA Exhibition and Conference Sdn Bhd.

The DSA is Asia's largest defence and security exhibition and among the five of
the most prestigious defence exhibitions in the world.

The 2010 edition, to be held at Putra World Trade Centre here from April 19-22,
attracted the participation from countries like Australia, Turkey, Germany, the
United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, France, South Africa, Poland,
Switzerland, India, South Korea, China and Singapore.
