DEMOCRAT PARTY URGES POLICE TO PROBE ATTACK ON BENDERA HQ
Jakarta, Feb 13 (ANTARA) - The associate chairman of the Democrat Party (PD), Anas Urbaningrum, called on the police on Saturday to investigate thoroughly the attack at the Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat (Bendera) headquarters on Friday.
"Connecting it with the Democrat Party would be slander. We, of all people, deplore the attack at Bendera. To us, violence never solves problems. PD is strongly against violence. Violence is not found in PD's lexicon. The police must immediately investigate the case," he said here on Saturday.
On the other hand Anas appealed to the police to also ensure law enforcement by immediately arresting Bendera activists Mustar Bona Ventura and Ferdi who had been named suspects in a case of smearing the son of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and several others with regard to the Bank Century case.
"Police should not create the impression they are neglecting it or slowing down the handling of the case of people who have been openly slandered," he said.
Anas said if law violations are ignored, resistance is ignored it could potentially cause horizontal conflict in the community.
"That is why the police must immediately settle it. The law must be enforced. The law and public order must be proven to be stronger than slander and resistance," he said.
As has been reported three of six activists of the Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat (Bendera) who were in the non-governmental organization's headquarters on Friday night were attacked by minimally eight people wielding wooden sticks, knives and swords.
The attackers vandalized, attacked and shouted the names of Bendera activists Mustar Bona Ventura and Ferdi who have been named suspects by the police over the smearing case.
