FORMER ACTIVIST: BENDERA HQ ATTACKERS WERE UKI STUDENTS

Jakarta, Feb 13 (ANTARA) - Former student activist Sangab Surbakti said the attackers of the Bendera Headquarters on Friday were student activists of the law faculty of the Indonesian Christian University (UKI).

"They came there not to find Ferdi Semaun and Mustar Bonaventura (two suspects in the case of smearing the president's son) but because they had problems with other UKI activists at the headquarters," he said here on Saturday.

Sangab said he did not take part in the attack but knew sbout the cause of the problem.

"So this is actually an internal affair of the friends in the UKI's Law Faculty movement and has no political background, much less connections with the Bank Century case," he said.

He said some of those who came to the non-governmental organization headquarters told him that they came there with a good intention of settling their problem with several UKI student activists reported to be in the place that night but they had been received rudely causing a fight.

"So those who came there were not paid people to support certain political power. It was about a problem between UKI activists," he said.

Sangab said a fight among UKI activists had once also happened in August 2009 when the Bendera headquarters was in Tebet.

He said the incident at the Bendera headquarters which is also the office of the Indonesia Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) had been settled with the PDIP executives.

As has been reported eight people wielding wooden sticks, knives and swords attacked three of six Bendera activists who happened to be in the headquarters on Friday night.

They attacked, vandalized and shouted names of Bendera activist Mustar Bona Ventura and Ferdi named suspects several days before in the case of smearing the names of the presiden's son and several others in connection with the Bank Century case.***
