SIX STUDENTS WOUNDED IN BOGOR LANDSLIDES

Bogor, W Java, Indonesia, Feb 13 (ANTARA) - Landslides have damaged tens of houses and a school building in Pabuaran village, Sukamakmur suburb, Bogor regency. In the disaster, six students got wounded.

The landslides hit the village after torrential rain showered the area on Friday. One of the wounded PGRI Junior High School students was in critical condition, a surviving student said here Saturday.
The injured students were identified as Ulung Maulana, Anida, Mamat, Rahmat, Iis, and Dede Susilawati.

The 15-year-old Dede Susilawati remained in the intensive care unit of Jakarta's Sukanto Tanoto hospital due to her critical condition.

According to Dede Susilawati's class mate, Andi, the accident occurred when the students were sheltering outside their classroom building to wait for the end of rain.

But, amid the torrential rain, a two-meter cliff near their class room building suddenly collapsed and its landslides crushed the building, he said.

"We are not aware that the walls of our class room suddenly collapses. We do not hear the landslide sound," said Andi, who happened to stay outside when the landslide hit the school.

Six of 51 students got injured as a result of the rubble, the 15-year-old Andi said.

Meanwhile the school's deputy principal, Wahli, said the wounded students had been admitted to local hospitals for medical treatment.

"Until this time, Dede Susilawati remains unconscious at Sukanto Tanoto hospital. The school management will take responsibility for the students' medicare," he said.

Wahli denied his students' allegation that the low quality of the school construction was the cause of the collapse.

Besides crushing a school, the heavy rain-related disaster also destroyed hundreds of hectares of paddy field near Cipamingkis river, Bogor regency, local residents said.

In anticipating an increase in natural calamities during the current rainy season, Bogor district's disaster management agency had deployed 121 of its workers to 12 flood- and landslide-prone areas.

Each targeted area had received two 10-member teams to help locals face emergency situations, the secretary of Bogor district's disaster management agency, Suhandri, said.

The 12 targeted areas were Cisarua, Megamendung, Ciawi, Cigombong, Cijeruk, Caringin, Sukajaya, Nanggung, Babakanmadang, Citeureup, Gunungputri and Cileungsi.

An emergency alert status was imposed on the whole of Bogor district from December 2009 to March 2010, he said.

During the peak of the rainy season, the Bogor region was usually vulnerable to floods and landslides, he said.

Over the past two days torrential rains had showered many parts of Bogor district, causing floods that inundated hundreds of houses in four sub districts.

The flood-hit areas were Babakan Madang, Parung Panjang, Cariuk, and Citeurup.***
