HOUSE TO SUMMON FINANCE MINISTER OVER GAYUS CASE

Jakarta, April 3 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) Finance Committee is to summon the finance minister and the director general of taxation over the Gayus Tambunan case soon, a spokesman said.

"Commission XI will ask for an explanation from the finance minister regarding the work system in the directorate general of taxation and why the Gayus Tambunan case could have happened," the commission's deputy chairman, Achsanul Qosasi, said at a discussion on remuneration, corruption and tax mafia.

Gayus is believed to have committed a tax crime as a mere common staff member of the directorare general of taxation he has Rp25 billion in his account.

Achsanul said the commission would hold an internal meeting following the opening of the House's third sitting for 2009-2010 on Monday.

At the meeting with the finance minister the commission meanwhile would among other things ask whether Gayus had operated alone or as a part of a network, whether other "Gayuses" might be involved.

Achsanul said the commission had initially wanted to summon the finance minister to ask for an explanation about a finding that the government had not received around Rp51 trillion in due taxes.

But, because the Gayus case had now become a hot issue the commission's questions would also touch on the widely reported matter, he said.

Achsanul said the commission would also ask about the composition and performance of the Tax Oversight Committee which consists of retired finance ministry officials.

The parliament member from the ruling Democrat Party said the revelations made in the Gayus case would certainly serve as a lesson for all parties.
