DEFENSE MINISTER INSPECTS BATEK ISLAND
Atambua, E Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, April 3 (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro inspected Batek Island bordering on Timor Leste or East Timor by helicopter on Saturday.
He was accompanied by the chief of the IX/Udayana Military Command, Major General Hotma Mangaraja Pandjaitan, the director general of defense strategy Major General Syarifuddin Tippe and the director general of defense planning Rear Admiral Gunadi.
Batek Island is one of the ten islands located on the border between Indonesia and Timor Leste. The island, the size of three football fields, is vulnerable to security problems.
Minister Purnomo also inspected one of the land checkpoints in Mota-ain, Atambua, on Saturday.
He said he wished to see directly conditions in the regions bordering on other countries including Timor Leste.
"I also want to see the conditions of soldiers at the border," he said.
In addition, he said, he was also making an inventory of the needs of the soldiers to support their tasks.
