Plan aims for uniform fertiliser prices

Hanoi (VNA) - The leading petrol group's chairman Dinh La Thang said he is determined to make fertiliser prices across the country unified at a level that's 10 to 15 percent lower than current market prices.

Thang made the statement at the second quarter meeting held by the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) on July 7.

PetroVietnam admitted that until now, it could not unify fertiliser prices as had been planned for earlier this year.

At the meeting, Thang affirmed again that the Phu My Fertiliser plant, PetroVietnam's subsidiary, would set the uniform prices at a rate of 10 to 15 percent lower than average prices at local markets.

To help carry out the plan, PetroVietnam has built four factories in four different parts of the country, and set up 38 major fertiliser distributors and 1,335 retail sales agents nationwide to guarantee that fertiliser is sold directly to farmers.

The move is aimed at avoiding stockpiling and speculation by intermediary outlets, which push retail prices up.

In the first six months of this year, Phu My Fertiliser produced about 346,000 tonnes of fertiliser and imported another 153,000 tonnes to meet domestic demand and to stabilise the local market.

With a production capacity of around 750,000 tonnes of fertiliser per year, Phu My can satisfy over 30 percent of local demand.

A representative of Phu My Fertiliser petitioned the Government to publish a specific regulation for fertiliser exporters to help ensure the uniform pricing policy is successful.

Phu My Fertiliser prices averaged at 8,700 VND (0.52 USD) per kilogramme, with the cheapest price being 8,300 VND per kilogramme at Ha Bac Fertiliser Co, while import prices were higher than 8,700 VND.
