Cooperation of Kazakhstan and UNESCO
Almaty, May 20, 2009 (Khabar) - Kazakhstan’s monuments join UNESCO World Heritage sites. Historical monuments of the Silk Way situated in Kazakhstan may be added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A corresponding topic was in the focus of an international seminar “Serial World Heritage Nomination of the Silk Way”. The project involves China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. They are the countries through which the Great Silk Way used to run.
Feng Jing, representative of UNESCO World Heritage Centre:
- Kazakhstan is part of the great Silk Way. Having studied monuments of Central Asia, we managed to get closer to the solution of a mystery of that cultural and historical phenomenon.
The UNESCO World Heritage list is now made up of 878 cultural and natural monuments from 145 countries. Among the top places, one can find the Hodja Ahmet Yassau Mausoleum, Tamgaly petroglyphs as well as the steppe around Lake Sary Arka. Kazakhstan’s scientists have placed bids for another 10 historical monuments for the UNESCO to be considered. They also include the ancient settlement of Otrar, Besshatyr burial tombs, the Akyrtas complex, Borolday and Saki tombs ad the ancient settlements of Suran and Kailyk. According to UNESCO representatives, they have to do a lot of study each and every monument separately.
Karl Baipakov, director, Margulan Institute of Archeology:
- They are about to be added to the list of the culturally significant monuments of humanity. They will be better conserved which means Kazakhstan and UNESCO will have to follow some rules, take efforts and spend money to preserve the monuments in a good condition. It was important to prevent them from devastation and make them available for tourists.
During the seminar, specialists will perform a contrastive analysis and evaluation of all the monuments presented by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and China.
