CDM Expects Better Results In Rio Olympics Compared With London In 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysian chef-de-mission (CDM) for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil, Mohamed Al Amin Abdul Majid, believes the current contingent can perform better than what was achieved in London four years ago. Al Amin said the fact that 32 athletes had qualified for the Rio Olympics from 10 sports was itself a marked improvement. "If we look at the progress of our athletes, their performance and achievements, there is every reason to believe they will be more competitive in Rio...for example badminton, cycling and diving. "I am therefore confident they can surpass the past achievement," he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Thursday night before flying off to Brazil with the badminton and weightlifting squads. In the 2012 edition in London, the Malaysian contingent won one silver from badminton through Lee Chong Wei from the men's singles and a bronze from Pandelela Rinong in the diving event. The London Olympic contingent comprised 29 athletes from nine sports. -- BERNAMA
