MFA: UK remains vital strategic partner in Europe foe Thailand

BANGKOK, June 25 (TNA) -- The Thai government affirmed that the UK would remain to be one of the most important strategic partner for Thailand and the country would continue to maintain strong relations. Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesman Sek Wannamethee said as a long time and close friend of the United Kindom, Thailand has always been closely monitoring the resolution of the European Union (EU), adding that the Thai government fully respects the desicion of the British people in leaving the EU. At the same time, the Thai government would continue to view the UK as its vital strategic partner in Europe and would continue to maintain the strong bond between both countries, despite the fact that the UK is no longer a member of the EU. The spokesman stressed that Thailand would continue the good relationship and cooperation between both parties, as they have been forged on bilateral agreements which benefit both countries on the state, public and people levels. He said Thailand would also closely monitor discussions between the EU and UK and wishes Britain the best in its endeavour to maintain its strong position in the world economy and the world stage. Asked whether the Thai government has had talks with the UK after the decision was finalised, the spokesman said, the currently UK Ambassador to Thailand Brian Davidson had called the MFA's Department of European Affairs Director General Songpol Sukchan on the EU exit process, during which both sides had agreed to hold further talks to lessen the impacts the move moght have on the exonomic spheres for both countries.
