UAE wins membership of Arab Commission on Human Rights

CAIRO, 7th October, 2015 (WAM) -- The United Arab Emirates has yesterday won membership of the Arab Commission on Human Rights, ACHR, after elections at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League, in the presence of representatives of member states. Hani Mohammed bin Huwaidin, a diplomat at the UAE Embassy in Cairo and a member of the permanent delegation, represented the UAE at the meeting The UAE's candidate, Amina Muhairi, Deputy Director of Human Rights Department at the Foreign Ministry, has become the first woman to win membership of the ACHR since its inception. Kuwaiti and Qatari candidates also won membership of the commission. The elections were held for three vacant seats on the committee and nominees from seven countries, the United Arab Emirates, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Sudan, Iraq, Qatar, Lebanon and Kuwait, contested the vote. The ACHR is the first Arab commission formed to follow up human rights and fundamental freedom issues in the region. It considers reports from member states, and pressurises the implementation of the measures put forward by member states towards the realisation of the rights and freedoms as set forth in the provisions of the Arab Charter on Human Rights. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395286370024.html
