Vietnam has potential for 3G network development

Hanoi, Jul 7 (VNA) - Though lagging behind regional countries in deploying the third-generation (3G) mobile network, Vietnam has potentials for this technology development, said Ericsson President for Southeast Asia Jan Signell.

President J. Signell said other nations' experiences have helped Vietnam take the right track in approaching the technology, focusing on Internet service right from the beginning.

He forecast that Vietnam 's telecom industry will keep its current high growth, particular in the mobile Internet services.

He cited Vietnam 's high economic growth and increasing people's income as reasons for his optimistic view about its telecom market.

Singapore 's Frost & Sullivan Group Representative Marc Einstein shared the view, pointing to the fact that only 40 percent of the population use mobile phone and of them, only two percent use broadband services.

Vice President cum Technology Director of Orange France Telecom Marc Fossie said all necessary conditions have emerged in the country for 3G technology development. The technology will provide a kickstart for a jump forward in the country's telecom and broadband mobile industry.

At present, the Ministry of Information and Communications is preparing to grant licences to four enterprises to offer 3G service by the end of this year. However, all seven mobile service providers: MobiFone, Vinaphone, Viettel Mobile, S-Fone, EVN Telecom, HT Mobile and GTel, said they have had technology infrastructure and development strategy ready for 3G service business.
