Iran grants city status to Greater Tunb in Persian Gulf

Bandar Abbas, IRNA – A Hormuzgan provincial official has said that the Islamic Republic of Iran designated Greater Tunb in the Persian Gulf as a city due to its crucial role in providing a wide range of services to residents of the area.

Mohammad Javad Khojasteh announced on Monday that according to the studies, Shamil village and the village of Greater Tunb are not located in the confines of any city, so its conversion to a city has been declared unhindered.

He pointed out that the village of Greater Tunb enjoys the urban texture, noting that it provides a wide range of services to residents of the area.

The islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs, along with Abu Musa, are situated closest to the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The strait is one of the most significant international straits and links the Persian Gulf to the Oman Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb are two small islands located in the eastern Persian Gulf, approximately 12 kilometers apart from each other and 20 kilometers south of the Iranian island of Qeshm.
