Mongolia established diplomatic relations with Japan 40 years ago.
The first volunteer of Japan International Cooperation Agency visited Mongolia in 1992. JICA opened its resident representative office in 1997. Within the framework of the JICA “Grass Root – Human Security” program, over 400 projects have been carried out so far.
The Embassy of Japan in Mongolia has presented investments and construction works performed with financing from Japan within development aid.
In 1999, in the frames of a JICA project, a research was conducted on Ulaanbaatar auto road improvement and development and a road was built connecting western part of the city with the eastern within non-refundable aid of Japan. As a symbol of the aid received from the Japanese people, the road is named as “Sun Road”. It is one of main roads contributing to the relief of traffic congestion in Ulaanbaatar,
Presently, the construction of an overpass is coming to the end. It is the first in Mongolia ferro-concrete overpass. Like the Sun Road, the overpass is named as “Sun Overpass”.
There is no sector the Japan Grass Root program reached. Most of the projects implemented within its scope are targeted at the development of human resources in educational sector.
