Brexit Won't Lessen Britain's Commitment To ASEAN Security - Says British Envoy
KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 (Bernama) -- Britain's exit from the European Union (Brexit), will not reduce the country's commitment towards security in ASEAN, says British High Commissioner to Malaysia Victoria Treadell.
She said Britain, as part of the Five Power Defence Agreement which included Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, have been dispatching their defence assets to the region, annually, for exercise purpose with Malaysia and Singapore.
"With the current geopolitical situation in the region such as the South China Sea and Sabah, Britain's contribution is not going to lessen," she told a roundtable on “Lessons Learned from Brexit - Risk and Opportunities for ASEAN” here Thursday.
She said, in contrast, the country would increase its support to the region's defence and security by positioning its latest defence assets.
The roundtable, organised by CIMB ASEAN Research Institute and ASEAN Business Club, discussed the experience of Britain's participation in the European Union and lessons that can be learnt from the nation's separation from the economic bloc.
