EU representatives satisfied with Thailand's solution to fishery issues

BANGKOK, November 4 (TNA) - Representatives of the European Union (EU) have visited fishing areas in Thailand and expressed their satisfaction with the Thai government's solution to fishery issues. Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha told journalists, after the Cabinet's weekly meeting on Tuesday, that the EU representatives recently visited the Thai areas and praised Thailand's solution to fishery issues, including illegal fishing. The prime minister said that the solution is aimed at not only freeing Thailand from the EU’s yellow card, but also taking care of fishermen and keeping a balance between fishing and resources. The prime minister revealed that EU will send representatives to inspect progress in Thailand's solution to fishery issues again early next year. The prime minister noted that the Thai Cabinet also approved an executive decree on fishing and related laws to tackle alleged human trafficking in the local fishery sector. According to the Thai premier, all the laws include systematic solution to alleged human trafficking and issues concerning fishing business operators, workers, officials and wrongdoers. The prime minister noted that he has also proposed to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, who is on an official visit to Thailand from November 1-4, to jointly develop the fishing business and the Sri Lankan president has agreed in principle, saying he will raise the proposal for further discussion in Sri Lanka.
