MALAYSIA TO DISCUSS WTO ISSUES UNDER DOHA ROUND

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will attend the informal
ministerial gathering of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to discuss issues
under the Doha round of negotiations on Jan 29, 2011 in Davos, Switzerland.

Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Mustapa
Mohamed is among the 24 trade ministers invited by Switzerland to focus on
identifying the strategy to conclude the round by this year.

"Malaysia supports the conclusion of the round as it would promote global
economic growth and prevent members from resorting to protectionist measures,"
MITI said in a statement Monday.

In late 2001, the world's trade ministers launched the Doha round of world
trade talks in the capital city of Qatar with the goal of helping poor countries
prosper through trade.

However, the talks have been stalled on the United States' demands that
advanced developing countries like China, Brazil and India open their markets
more in exchange for cuts in farm subsidies and agricultural and manufactured
good tariffs that the US is being asked to make.

The minister will earlier also attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual
Meeting in Davos from January 26 to January 28.

Enroute to Davos, Mustapa will be meeting with interested UK investors
looking for opportunities in Malaysia, especially in areas of defence and
security, aviation/aircraft licensed engineers training college, environment
and renewable energy.

He will also be meeting Malaysian students, professionals and Malaysian
Kitchen operators in London, said MITI.

For the WEF meeting, the minister has been invited to participate in
a number of public, private and industry partnership forums.

Besides being invited as a participant to several sessions, he will be a
discussion leader for the development lessons from high-growth economies.

In addition to these WEF scheduled sessions, Mustapa will have bilateral
meetings with his counterparts from Germany, India, Republic of Korea, New
Zealand, Switzerland and Egypt as well as with key businessmen on the sideline
of the forum.

These meetings are to identify investment opportunities and to exchange
views on areas of mutual interest relating to trade and investment.

Malaysia has had no high level participation in the WEF meeting the
past two years.

On January 30, Mustapa is to also join Prime Minister Najib Tun
Razak for the launching of "Invest Malaysia 2011" report in Abu Dhabi, United
Arab Emirates.

The launch of the report, which will provide essential information on
business opportunities in Malaysia, is aimed at attracting investors from the
six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to Malaysia.

Mustapa will also lead a trade and investment mission to Syria and co-chair
the second joint trade committee meeting with Minister of Economy and Trade of
Syria, LamiaaAssi, in Damascus from January 31 to February 3.
