Thailand to collect tax from tutorial schools
BANGKOK, March 8 (TNA) -- The Finance Ministry is planning to propose the cabinet to collect corporate tax from private-run tutorial schools, according to Manit Nitiprateep, spokesperson of the ministry’s Revenue Department.
Tutors at such schools will also have to pay income tax, he said.
Manit told reporters that the ministry plans to ask the cabinet to consider amending the Revenue Code within the next few weeks to require private-run tutorial schools to pay corporate tax to the government.
The existing Revenue Code allows tax exemption for all private schools.
Manit said discussions on the amendment were made between the Revenue Department and the Education Ministry and both have agreed that tutorial school business has grown significantly while such schools are set up to make profits, so they should be required to pay tax like other private businesses.
Currently, there are about 2,000 tutorial schools in Thailand, 500 of which are in Bangkok and surrounding provinces while the others are in upcountry. (TNA)
