Doha, November 13 (QNA) - Qatari short documentary "And They Burn The Sea", by filmmaker Majid Al Remaihi, was nominated for the Oscar Consideration in the Documentary Short subject. Produced by the Doha Film Institute, it is the first-ever Qatari movie to qualify for the Oscars. CEO of the Doha Film Institute Fatma Al Remaihi said they feel proud and honored to watch young filmmakers from the region emerge as creative leaders in the new wave of filmmakers, who present impressive stories that have a global resonance. This is a great achievement for the promising Qatari youth and Arab filmmakers, and it constitutes an important milestone in the development and growth of the film industry in Qatar, she said. Al Remaihi added that the achievement will inspire promising young Qatari talents to continue their cinematic ambitions, and leave an important impact on the global cinema community. Filmed on an abandoned fishermen's village in Northern Qatar, the film depicts the experience of familial loss and is "an ode to the filmmaker’s living mother whose memories abruptly left her during the making of the film. The filmmaker Majid Al Remaihi said that he, seven years ago, began to feel an endless sea drive a wedge between himself and his mother as her struggle with Alzheimer’s continued to chip away at her sense of being. He added that the film helped him piece together abstractions and unfinished conversations as a result of his need for gestures to mourn and heal. (QNA)
