Soyuz-TMA-13 launching in Baikonur
Baikonur, 14 October 2008, (Khabar) - 18th long-term expedition to ISS
blasts off.
A Soyuz-TMA-13 spaceship carrying the 18th long-term expedition
to the International Space Station has successfully blasted off from the
Baikonur launch pad. The expedition's team features a Russian-American crew
consisting of Russian astronaut Yuriy Lonchakov, NASA astronaut Michael Fink
and space tourist number 6 Richard Garriot. The 41-year old millionaire from
the United States of America is a son of America's space veteran Owen
Garriot who in the 1970s participated in an Apollo flight and the Sky Lab
orbital space station. Garriot junior has been to Antarctica twice, rowed a
canoe along the Amazon, studied mountain gorillas in Africa and even took
part in a dive to the Titanic. But his most unusual deed is the purchase of
a soviet "Lunokhod" moon walker which is still on the Moon. As a result,
Garriot is the only man in the world to possess property on another planet.
The 18th long term expedition's engineer and commander of the Russian crew,
Yuriy Lonchakov was born in Balkhash and he began his career as a pilot in
Aktobe.
Yuriy Lonchakov, board engineer, 18th long-term expedition:
- When Yuriy Alexeyevich Gagarin was in space he said "people, take care of
the Earth as it is beautiful". Now, we perform a lot of flights and
experiments and take photos of the Earth's surface. Unfortunately, we can
see deforestation and river and lake pollution. I want to ask my compatriots
in Kazakhstan to take care of their land.
The 18th long-term expedition commander, US air force colonel, Michael Flink
and engineer Yuriy Lonchakov are set to spend 185 days in space. In 2009,
the permanent crew of the International Space Station is expected to grow to
reach 6 people with 4 manned space ships to be launch from Baikonur instead
of 2 launches performed currently. Moreover, the crew is also expected to
work on some scientific programmes and take part in the final phase of the
ISS construction. After docking, representatives of the two astronaut
families are going to meet on the station. Sergei Volkov, the commander of
the ISS expedition, which is about to finish its tour of duty at the
station, is a son of the famous Soviet astronaut Alexander Volkov who was in
one crew with Tokhtar Aubakirov. After some joint work at the International
Space Station, Sergei Volkov and Richard Garriot are both to land on
Kazkahstan's soil.
