Al-Watan Warns of Worsening Ukrainian Crisis

Doha, March 02 (QNA) - In its Wednesday editorial, Al-Watan newspaper warned of the worsening of the Ukrainian crisis with the increase in the frequency of bombing and battles, without any real sign of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy over military solutions. The newspaper said that the developments on ground indicate that the war that began is unpredictable; however, it's clear until this moment that the whole world is on the verge of dangerous developments, unless reason and wisdom prevail and dialogue and diplomacy are chosen as means to resolve this conflict, which could escalate and go beyond its current geographical borders. Al-Watan added that the United Nations (UN) estimated the number of internally displaced people in Ukraine to be one million people, adding to the 660,000 people who fled Ukraine to neighboring countries. The number is increasing dramatically, according to an official at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the newspaper added. The newspaper stated that the UNHCR representative to Ukraine Karolina Lindholm Billing said during a press conference for the Swedish government that that there has been a lot of attention on those who flee to neighboring countries, but its important to remember that the largest number of people affected are located within Ukraine. "We still dont have reliable figures regarding the number of people displaced inside Ukraine, but we estimate that it has to be about one million people who have fled internally or who are currently on a train, a bus or in a car trying to get to safety," she added. Al-Watan pointed out that during the past months, the Ukraine crisis remained the most prominent file on the international political scene, before it turned into a horrific reality in light of the failure of intensive diplomatic efforts. Concluding, the newspaper stressed that it is not too late, if everyone utilize the necessary wisdom to resolve this conflict through serious, responsible and courageous dialogue to avoid what could result from the war, which is destructive.
