Another Turkish National Arrested On Suspicion Of Threatening National Security - Malaysia's IGP
KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysian police have arrested another Turkish national, believed to have links with activities that threatened national security, in Pahang (Malaysia's east coast) on Thursday.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said the man in his 50s was detained at about 4.30pm to facilitate investigations under Section 130 of the Penal Code.
“Police have sufficient reasons to detain the suspect,” he told reporters at the Bukit Aman Senior Officers Mess here Friday.
“Last Wednesday, Khalid through his official Twitter confirmed the arrest of two Turkish nationals with links to activities that threatened national security.
Yesterday Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported to have said the arrest of the two Turkish men were made after police intercepted the communications of the duo.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said following information from the Regional Digital Counter Messaging Communication Centre, a team from the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division launched an operation to arrest the two suspects aged 43 and 37.
Khalid also confirmed the three suspects knew each other.
Meanwhile commenting on speculations that the Southeast Daesh militant leader Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi was killed in a drone attack in Ma’dan, Syria, Khalid said his death has yet to be confirmed.
Muhammad Wanndy, 26, from Durian Tunggal, Melaka was believed to be the mastermind in several attacks in the region, including an entertainment centre in Puchong near here last year.
Earlier Khalid witnessed the handing over of duties from outgoing Community Safety and Crime Prevention Department director Datuk Rusli Ahmad to new director Tajudin Md Isa.
