Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport to soon use automatic baggage screening
BANGKOK, July 21 (TNA) - The state-run Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) plans to use an automatic baggage screening system late this year.
AOT President Nitinai Sirismatthakarn told journalists of the plan on Tuesday, confirming that Don Mueang Airport will use the automatic baggage screening system, like the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, as of either late September or early October 2015.
The AOT president announced that the Don Mueang Airport's annual capacity will also be raised to 30 million passengers, from 22 million now.
The AOT president noted that the plan to use an automatic baggage screening system followed complaints by several passengers and delays by several commercial planes due to stricter security checks at the Don Mueang Airport since July 17 before the stricter security measure was eased earlier in the day.
The AOT president stressed that airport authorities have switched to use lenient security regulations after realising the problem.
According to the AOT president, the Don Mueang Airport has increased 32 personnel to help check bags of passengers at its terminals.
Touching on a planned procurement of new CTX bomb scanners at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the AOT revealed that a committee resolved at its recent meeting that the supplier had just received a certificate guaranteeing the quality of the existing equipment, meaning that the Suvarnabhumi International Airport will have to use the existing bomb scanners for another four years, starting from next month, and there is no need to procure the new bomb scanners for at least another four years.
