Court Jails Bangladeshi National Bar Waiter 20 Years for Rape

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- A Bangladesi bar waiter was jailed 20 years and ordered to be caned 10 times by the Sessions Court here Monday for raping and causing hurt to a 15-year-old female colleague, last year. Judge M.Kunasundary imposed the penalties on Md Robin, 28, after he changed his plea to guilty and after hearing the victim's impact statement. Other than the victim, an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist had been called to testify. In her judgement, the judge said the act perpetrated by the accused, who was a foreign national, was a serious crime and his action against the victim, who was still young, was cruel and inhuman. Md Robin, who is married and has a young child, raped and voluntarily caused hurt to the girl near the Selangor Royal Golf Club in Wangsa Maju here, at 11pm on Oct 1, 2016. He was charged under Section 376(2)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 30 years and whipping on conviction. Based on the facts of the case, the victim had requested the help of the accused to send her home on his motorcycle after work. Along the way, the accused who was drunk, told the victim to take over the motorcycle and he rode pillion, resulting in a fall near the golf club. The accused then pinned the victim's body and warned her not to put up a fight. He punched her face and tied her hands using his necktie when she tried to fend him off and forced her to perform oral sex on him before raping her. Deputy public prosecutor Liyana Zawani Mohd Radzi urged the court "to impose a heavy sentence on Md Robin, a foreign national, for daring to commit a crime here, while the victim, whom the accused had threatened and inflicted injury on, was still young". "Due to the incident, the victim is put to shame and grief and cannot forget the petrifying episode," DPP added. -- BERNAMA
