DISCIPLINE NEEDED FOR MALAYSIA'S PROGRESS, UNITY: SARAWAK CM

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia) Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Chief minister of the East Malaysia state of Sarawak Abdul Taib Mahmud says the thrust for Malaysia to achieve developed nation status with a high-income economy by 2020 will rest on discipline in politics, economy and the individual.

Taib said on Friday the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government has proven the correctness of practising discipline in the three areas in achieving development and national solidarity in a multi-racial and multi-religious nation.

"Do not think that once we have progressed, we do not need to be disciplined and that we can get everything with government support and assistance as we should take heed of the current economic crisis hitting advanced countries in Europe," he said when addressing the Sarawak state-level Malaysia Day celebration at the Parade Ground of the Sarawak State Assembly Complex here.

Taib said to achieve developed nation status by 2020, cooperation among the various races in supporting national development policies is of utmost importance.

"Sarawak is now on the threshold of the second wave of political development with clearer policies to 2030, and I believe Sarawak will become an important component in the Federation of Malaysia," he said.

Some 50,000 people converged on the banks of the Sarawak River to watch the various colourful Malaysia Day presentations including boat floats and a fireworks display.

On Sept 15 1963, the banks of Kuching, which was then known as Boulder Base, witnessed the handing over of power by the British colonial government to a local leader when the last British Governor, Sir Alexander Waddell left the Astana on the warship 'British Frigate.'
