Hermitage presents collection of Russian weapon
Astana, November 28, 2009 (Khabar) - The Hermitage museum has presented a collection of the Russian ceremonial and hunting weapon of 15-19th centuries to Kazakhstan. The exposition ahs opened in State museum of gold and precisions metals. The best samples of the weapons demonstrate the development of Russian weapon making art during five centuries.
Aleksei Bantikov, restoration laboratory head, State Hermitage Museum:
- It is our history, since the Kazakh and Russian nations used to live in one country. They were using these weapons during wars and on holidays these weapons were held by the best representatives of our countries. The exhibition involves the works of famous gunsmiths as well as the works of people, whose names were unfortunately forgotten in the course of history. We understand that they made significant contributions to the creation of these samples.
The exhibition involved over 50 objects, made by the gunsmiths of Moscow, Tula and St. Petersburg. All these sabres, swords, guns and knives used to be elements of the costume for official visits or hunting equipment of the Russian nobility. Today, all the weapons are still in good condition. Gunsmiths used a lot of materials for the decoration of their products such as fabrics, gold, precious metals and ivory. Miniatures and copies of weapons were in great demand. The exhibition also involves memorial objects such as the sword of Catherine II and the child’s weapon of Aleksandr II.

- People can learn how to use an automatic weapon within one year and our soldiers are successfully coping with it. But in order to know how to use a sabre or knife, they need to practice for 20 years. But anyway, they managed to cope with it.
It is the second exhibition of the Hermitage in Kazakhstan with the first having taken place three years ago. In the near future it is planned to organize an
