ILO Urges RI To Improve Working Conditions For Disabled

Jakarta, Dec 4 (ANTARA) - International Labour Organization (ILO) has called on Indonesia to improve working conditions for the disabled. "People with disability often experience discrimination at the workplace. Some companies may hire them only because of their disability," the Program Manager of ILO`s Better Work Indonesia (BWI), Simon Field, said here on Tuesday. ILO, through Better Work Indonesia program, has created guidelines for companies in the country, especially in the Greater Jakarta area, for handling disabled workers. "These guidelines for employers are on how to give equal opportunities to disabled people in the workforce," Field stated. "According to the government`s Regulation No. 43/1998, companies are obliged to hire one disabled person for every 100 people they recruit," he noted. However, ILO pointed out that the regulation had yet to be implemented.
