Indian Embassy organises activities to mark 2nd International Yoga Day in Thailand

BANGKOK, June 12 (TNA) -- Indian Ambassador to Thailand Mr Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi invited people in Thailand to join the activities for the 2nd International Day of Yoga which would be held on June 26 as the mass yoga sessions would be organised in Bangkok and provinces. The Ambassador told TNA that that this year the yoga practitioners in Thailand would have more opportunities to join the mass yoga session to mark the 2nd International Day of Yoga because the events would not only be held in Bangkok but also in Chiang Mai and provinces in southern region. The organisers have focused to organise the event in Thailand as the yoga is popular exercise in the country, he said. Mr Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi said the idea of the International Day of Yoga originated when the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi addressed the 69th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014. He said "Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.” Subsequently, the UN General Assembly approved of June 21 as the "International Day of Yoga" by consensus with as many as 177 countries, including Thailand co-sponsoring the resolution. "We celebrated the 1st International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2015 in Bangkok, at this very place last year. The event was very successful with as many as 7,000 participants. This year we plan to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on 26 June in order to do it on a Sunday," he said. He said the event in Bangkok would be held at Chulalongkorn University's playgrounds, opposites to the main auditorium. The activities would started at 6.30am and would last around one hour. He added that yoga mats will be kept placed in advance on the ground at the venue. Participants can register online. The organisers would provide dedicated buses, with a banner of International Yoga Day, to pick up participants from BTS Siam Square and MRT Sam Yan. (TNA)
