Indonesia Mulls Moving Admin Centre Outside Java
By Azeman Ariffin
JAKARTA, April 12 (Bernama) -- Indonesia is mulling moving its adminstrative centre outside of the island to Java to get away from the rapid development taking place here.
Online media in Indonesia quoted National Planning Development Board (Bappenas) head Bambang Brodjonegoro as saying that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had ordered the National Planning and Development Ministry to carry out a comprehensive study on the matter.
"Jakarta is the centre of everything, finance, industry, commerce and administration. With the population density already very high and so much land clearing taking place for development, the time has come to consider having the administrative centre in a new location," he said.
He added that Jakarta would continue to remain as an economic hub.
However, he said the government had to decide on where the new adminstrative capital would be built.
