Iran Tells Rich Nations To Get Serious With Fighting Global Hunger

Berlin, Jan 20, IRNA -- Iran's Agriculture Minister Sadegh Khalilian here Saturday called on industrialized countries to intensify their efforts in tackling global hunger, according to IRNA. Addressing the 5th Summit of Agriculture Ministers in Berlin, Khalilian urged First World nations to come up with practical steps to combat hunger. Industrialized countries should transfer their technology and know-how to underdeveloped and Third World nations in a bid to improve food and agriculture production in those countries, the Iranian minister said. It would be better for wealthy countries to reduce their military spending and use that money to help poorer countries to boost their food and agriculture production, Khalilian added. He also stressed the need for better quality of food products. Agriculture ministers from 80 countries, representing some five billion people or 70 percent of the world population, attended the Berlin summit meeting./end
