Kaimana II Cruise Ship Destroyed By Fire

Padang, W Sumatra, April 20 (ANTARA) - Kaimana II cruise ship was destroyed by fire at Bungus pier, Teluk Kabung, Padang, West Sumatra, on Thursday at 11.30 am local time. "The fire department received a report on the mishap from a local resident," head of the Padang fire department Budi Erwanto said in Padang on Thursday. He said the fire was triggered by the negligence of some of he ship`s crew members when repairing the ship`s rear section. The flames rapidly spread to the rest of the ship as it has a great deal of fuel oil in its holds. He also said that the firemen had difficulties in putting out the raging flames because the incident was rather far away from Padang city center. "The fire men also had problems in dealing with the raging flames quickly because the ill-fated ship was located rather far from Muara port," he said. He said the firemen managed to put out the flames only after three fire engines came to the disaster area. "The flames had been put out in two hours, after which it went straight to the bottom of the sea," he said. He added that however, there were no fatalities in the mishap. "The owner of the cruiser, Ferry, suffered billions of rupiah in material losses," he said. At the time of the mishap, he added, many other boats were docking at Bungus port.
