KLIA Narcotics Police Foil Drug Smuggling Attempt Involving 5.9kg
SEPANG (Selangor, Malaysia) April 13 (Bernama) -- The Narcotics Crime Investigation Division at Kuala Lumpur International Airport foiled an attempt by an Indian national to smuggle in 5.9 kilograms of drugs worth RM260,000 (US$58,810) on Monday.
Sepang district police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Ali said the suspect aged 34, arrived at KLIA from Mumbai, India at 6.50am and apprehended at 8.20am after he was found milling around in a suspicious manner.
"He was brought to the Customs baggage scanning machine where drugs were found concealed underneath 38 of 40 sweetmeat boxes in his baggage," he told a press conference at the Sepang District Police Headquarters here, Wednesday.
He said the man who came from Chennai claimed to be a mobile phone shop owner in Mumbai and came to Malaysia to get a supply of telephone equipment.
Abdul Aziz said the suspect used a social visit pass to enter the country and it was his third visit this year.
"He has been remanded for seven days until April 16 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction," he added.
