Malaysia-North Korea Trade Will Not Be Affected In Wake Of Kim Killing

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia-North Korea trade will not be affected in the wake of the death of Kim Jong-Nam, the older half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 recently. Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Deputy Minister, Ahmad Maslan, said the bilateral trade was insignificant at only RM18.9 million (US$1 = RM4.45) in 2016. "Whatever happens, it would not affect Malaysia's trade turnover, as trade between us and North Korea is small scale," he said. Ahmad was speaking to reporters after witnessing the exchange of agreement among Uniti Education Group, Jonru Media Centre Indonesia and PT PP (Persero) TBK Indonesia here Wednesday. On whether the government would consider stopping trade with North Korea, Ahmad said, it would be up to the cabinet to decide. "We would be happier trading with those who are friendly with us," he said. He urged Malaysian entrepreneurs wishing to conduct business in the country to reconsider their decisions. "They can always look for friendlier countries and nicer to us," he said. Meawnhile, Uniti College President, Datuk Jamal Mohd Amin, said the agreement between the group and the industry players from Indonesia would help the college expand its Uniti Virtual Office in the Asean market. "This is important because we wish to build our network," he said. He said the college would also accept 150 Indonesian students during its next intake. -- BERNAMA
