By Mohd Nasir Yusoff
MANADO (North Sulawesi), May 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to arrive here this evening for a two-day working visit to attend the first Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit to be held here, Friday.
The CTI, involving the six member countries namely Malaysia, Indonesia, the
Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste, is being held at
this capital city of North Sulawesi in conjunction with the first World Ocean
Conference from May 11 to 15.
The CTI Summit would discuss six main agendas, namely Global Climate Change,
Marine Mega Biodiversity, Maritime Industries and Services, Marine and Coastal
Hazard Mitigation, Ocean as the Next Frontier and Integrated Ocean and Coastal
Management.
Other matters to be discussed are global marine observation system, marine
geology and geophysics, marine tourism, marine protection, coral reef, fish
cultivation and management, and small island management.
Upon arrival at Sam Ratulangi International Airport here, Najib and wife,
Rosmah Mansor, were expected to be received by Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia
Zainal Abidin Mohamed Zain and several local dignitaries.
Upon arrival, Najib will attend a Gala Dinner in honour of Heads of
Governments at the Grand Kawanua Convention Centre hosted by Indonesian
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Later Najib will meet his Papua New Guinea counterpart, Sir Micheal T.
Somare for a bilateral meeting.
On Friday, at the CTI Summit, Najib is scheduled to deliver his speech
stressing Malaysia's commitment, hopes and aspirations on the CTI theme on coral
reefs, fisheries and food security (CFF) with regard to the current episode of
global warming and climate change.
Through CTI, initiatives of which would involve National and Regional Action
Plans individually and collaboratively by member countries on marine resources,
coral reefs and fisheries, Malaysia is expected to also play a frontliner and
important role in mitigating the effects of climate change.
Malaysia's role and importance in the CTI is represented especially by the
vast Sulu and Sulawesi seas off Sabah, extending some 35,000 square kilometres,
rich with coral reefs and water surface of the earth which also played a very
important role in carbon absorbtion to reduce the impact of global warming.
Since May 11, senior officials had been deliberating on the agenda, and
later finalised at the CTI Ministers Meeting here today, where Malaysia is being
represented by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili.
Other Head of States attending the CTI will also deliver their statements
after the opening remark by President Susilo.
Najib will then join other heads of governments to adopt and sign the CTI
Leaders Declaration, a document that is said to be in crucial support of the
Manado Ocean Declaration adopted at the World Ocean Conference Thursday.
It touches on Oceans and Coasts and the Effects of Climate Change, Oceans'
Role in Addressing Climate Change and the Future of Our Oceans and Coasts.
Later, Friday evening, Najib will be leaving for a short visit to Makassar
for a 'ziarah' at the Makam Sultan Hasanuddin in Gowa, South Sulawesi and from
there will leave for Kuala Lumpur.
