MAPIM, International NGOs To Send Humanitarian Aid To Rohingyas In Myanmar

SHAH ALAM (Selangor, Malaysia), Nov 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Islamic Organisations Consultative Council (MAPIM) and 28 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from 20 countries will send humanitarian aid to the oppressed ethnic Rohingyas in Myanmar. MAPIM president Mohd Azmi Abd Hamid said the mission flotilla would set sail on Jan 10 next year, which would include about 50 volunteers comprising medical officers and humanitarian activists. "MAPIM is gathering funds to realise this mission and it is estimated that US$224,139 (RM1 million) is needed for the rental of three vessels and to buy food and other necessities for the Rohingya victims." He said this at a press conference after attending the ASEAN Ulama and Muslim NGO Meeting on the fate of the Muslim Rohingyas, here, Tuesday. Mohd Azmi said at the meeting, the humanitarian mission was among 10 action plans agreed upon, besides the Shah Alam Declaration. He said the declaration outlined 11 points including the call for Muslims worldwide to unite in protecting the lives and property of the ethnic Rohingyas in Myanmar. "This declaration also urged for the involvement of the United Nations and other international bodies to resolve the issue," he said. --BERNAMA
