MYCorps Kindergarten In Cambodia To Be Ready Early December

SIEM REAP, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- The construction of a kindergarten by participants of the MyCorps international volunteer programme in Kampung Anlong Samnar, here, is expected to be completed early next month. Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said with a built-up area of 650 square feet, the kindergarten would be equipped with amenities such as toilets and a playground. According to him, the construction of the kindergarten was being carried out by 49 volunteers of the MyCorps international volunteer programme Series II/2016 since Nov 7. "We expect the construction to be completed in three weeks. We want to leave a MyCorps legacy in Cambodia. "I am impressed with the team spirit shown by them (MYCorps volunteers). They are like one family, working together to build the kindergarten," he told Malaysian reporters after visiting the kindergarten project site. Khairy is on a two-day working visit to Cambodia since Wednesday. He said upon completion, the Cambodian Education and Development Fund would take over the management and operation of the kindergarten. "However, I hope they (the MyCorps volunteers) will take their own initiatives like adopting the kindergarten...they can come back here or send some donations like stationery and books in future," he said. Khairy also called for more youth participation in the MyCorps programme which is aimed at, among others, training its participants to become great future leaders. He said that so far, a total of US$912,536 (RM4 million) had been allocated for the implementation of the programme covering various expenses including training. "I hope this allocation can be increased in future and the volunteer mission of the programme expanded. We also hope that such a mission can be carried out in Sri Lanka, Laos and in the Middle Eastern countries," he said. The MyCorps programme is an initiative of the ministry, spearheaded by its Extraordinary People Impacting Community, a body which provides a platform focusing on human capital development through experience. --BERNAMA
