Preparation for the 18th OSCE economic and environmental forum
Astana, October 12, 2009 (Khabar) - The first session of the 18th OSCE Economic and Environmental forum will be held next February in Vienna. This is one the main events in the time-schedule of the future chairmanship of Kazakhstan in this international organization. A preparatory conference preceding this forum has opened in Astana and over 200 delegates from 40 countries of the world are taking part in it.
The second session of the 18th economic and environmental forum will be hosted by Prague and the second preparatory conference will take place in Minsk. The conference participants will be discussing such issues as the relaxation of customs procedures at frontiers, the development of road infrastructure, the construction of trans-continental transport corridors and the promotion of freight transportation
security within a period of two days. The task of the conference, the theme of which was suggested by the Kazakh side, lies in working out practical recommendations for the OSCE member-countries, developing the transport potential of states, introducing leading technologies and harmonizing national legislations. The transport issue is considered to be one of the priorities of the “Way to Europe” program as well.
Goran Svilanovic, the coordinator of the OSCE Economic and Environmental Activity:
- The application of new IT-technologies may contribute to the eradication of corruption at customs posts. If there is an opportunity of tracing information on any lorry approaching the border there will be no need to stop it. This would eliminate corruption in its own right. He noted that the OSCE is already developing legislative acts which aim at preparing countries for such cooperation.
Azat Bekturov, deputy minister of transport and communications of Kazakhstan:
- This is the opportunity for us to show what we’ve done and demonstrate what we’re planning to do concerning border crossing and customs matters. The next session will be dedicated to customs reforms as there are a lot of barriers including non-physical ones which we’ll have to overcome.
On the whole, Kazakhstan’s presidency will be contributing to the integration of the world transport system which will reinforce relations among member-countries of the Organization of Security and Co-operation in Europe.
