Religious Congress Secretariat Session
Astana, December 03, 2009 (Khabar) - The results of work of the third Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions and the plans until 2012 have been discussed in Astana. The first session after III Congress is held in Palace of peace and accord. The participants of the session have suggested to attract women and youth to the work of congress, increase number of section sessions on problematic topics and cooperate more actively with mass media. Last forum gathered about 80 delegations from 35 countries of the world and Kazakhstan plans to contribute into development of inter confessional dialogue on the post of OSCE chairman.
Kasym Zhomart Tokayev, Senate chairman, Parliament of Kazakhstan:
- A special UN resolution on the declaration of 2010 as the International year of cultural integration has been approved on Kazakhstan’s initiative. Our accomplishments inside the country are considered to be the result of the well-balanced and wise policy of the President, Nursultan Nazarbayev in the international arena. It is aimed at the construction of a democratic state where the peace and unity of Kazakh people are the most important assets.
One more initiative of Kazakhstan is to hold a summit of OSCE heads of state in Astana next summer. Its agenda will feature the development of an action program for securing inter-ethnic and inter-denominational accord, according to the Senate speaker. While discussing the results of the third Congress of leaders of world and traditional religions, the secretariat participants noted that interest in the inter-religious forum is growing from year to year alongside the number of people who would like to join in the promotion of the idea of religious tolerance.
Khaled Akasha, the main expert on Islam of the Pontifical Committee for Interreligious Dialogue of the Vatican:
- The recent meeting of the Kazakh President and Pope Benedict XVI in November in the Vatican further contributed to the promotion of inter-religious dialogue. The Pontifical Council highly appreciates the role of Kazakhstan in the strengthening of inter-denominational accord.
Yuriy Novgorodov, representative, Lutheran World Federation:
- There are very few places in the world where the leaders of Islamic, Christian and Judaist communities can sit together and talk. It is important that people see it and that the leaders turn to us in this respect.
According to Muhammad Shama, professor of Al-Azhar University in Egypt:
- I am very grateful to the president Nursultan Nazarbayev for presenting the opportunity for assembling representatives of various denominations. I took part in many similar forums, but saw a dialogue venue for representatives of all the religions for the first time in Astana.
The Senate speaker discussed the further development of initiatives by the head of state Nursultan Nazarbayev on the reinforcement of inter-denominational accord and dialogue between civilizations with the Metropolitan Emmanuel of France and the representative of the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel Meir Danino.
