Silk Way-2009 international rally
Aktau, September 11, 2009 (Khabar) - Three stages of the Silk Way-2009 international rally have been held in the Mangistau region. A 4 thousand kilometre rally route runs through Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. The contest involves racers from 20 countries. In the Mangistau region, the route runs through ancient roads through which the Silk Way used to pass.
Firdaus Kabirov, KAMAZ-Master team (Russia):
- For two days in a row, we have had very interesting stages which shows that the race is organised by professional planners and it can be among the Dakar rallies. The route was made up of deserts, heat, stones, dust, cross country terrain, ascends and descends. It is a very interesting race.
The Zhanaozen Airport turned into a rally camp for one day as the site was full of different vehicles. The race features 60 passenger cars and 20 trucks. They are all accompanied with around one hundred technical support cars, planes and helicopters. Live broadcasting of the rally is being shown by 150 television channels.
Sergei Girya, executive director, Silk Way Rally:
- The rally is held thanks to the decision of the presidents of Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. Kazakhstan signed a government decree on the conduction of such a race. Kazakhstan’s racers are participating in this contest showing good results. This is why we think this is a positive event and it is aimed at the strengthening of sport and good neighbouring ties.
The rally participants will also have to deal with the sand of the Kara-Kum desert. The race will be finished on the 13th of September in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat.
