Steppe Eagle 2009 international tactical exercises
Almaty, September 24, 2009 (Khabar) - The final stage of the Steppe Eagle 2009 international tactical exercises is now underway. The event involves over 15 hundred soldiers from Kazakhstan, Great Britain and the USA. The main aim of the training exercise is to improve the battle readiness and ability to hold peacekeeping operations featuring international forces. This is a peacekeepers’ check point. The patrol spotted a man with wires under his coat. Patrol soldiers fired some warning shots but the suspect tried to explode himself. The suicide-bomber was detained and defused by the soldiers.
Yerik Ibrayev, deputy battalion commander:
- Excellent! I liked the exercises especially the part where our soldiers cooperated with the US troops. They showed us how they do it and we showed them how we do it.
Matt Walsh, US army sergeant:
- We cooperated very well. Last week I participated alongside the 2nd battalion of KazBrig and I am at their base now. I have seen everything they’ve got, but I was really impressed with their equipment.
Sergeant Jessica Foey who spent 6 months in Kuwait is entrusted with the most difficult tasks. During the closing ceremony, she hoisted the US flag. She said she was impressed with Kazakhstan’s soldiers.
Jessica Foey, staff sergeant:
- They are very disciplined. They told us about Kazakhstan’s army and then we showed then how our staff operates. It is great that we have an opportunity to share our experience.
The organisation of headquarters is also vital during exercises. There, commanders develop strategies and summarize results. The soldiers delivered their reports in Kazakh, Russian and English.
