Thais in Bangladesh warned to stay indoors amid domestic political protests
BANGKOK, January 7 (TNA) - The Thai Embassy to Bangladesh has warned Thai nationals in the South Asian nation to stay indoors, avoid visiting government offices and prepare enough food and necessities, after domestic political protests have escalated.
The Thai Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital, issued the warning on Wednesday, after at least four people were killed and over 160 others were injured in the ongoing domestic political protests.
The Thai Embassy also advised Thai nationals in Dhaka and other cities to closely follow up the updated situation, remain indoors for the time being with preparations for enough food and water supply for a certain period of time, make necessary travel plans in advance carefully and avoid visiting or approaching to local government offices and protest sites.
The tense political standoff over the Bangladeshi opposition alliance's demand for a fresh general election under a non-party caretaker government system, which has been rejected by incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Bangladesh Awami League Party so far, has become escalating with both the ruling and the opposition parties calling for mass rallies of their supporters on January 5 to stage a showdown.
